While fresh seafood is abundant everywhere in this Maritime city, there are many other options outside of piscine cuisine. Here are a few dining picks of Halifax.

Ginegergrass – 1284 Barrington St, Halifax

Located about ½ mile from the waterfront and Pier 21, Gingergrass offers culinary greats of either Thai or Vietnamese tradition. With choices ranging from Pad Thai, Thai Ginger Curry, Sautéed Bean Curd and Fresh Spring Rolls made to order, any patron looking for something of Asian flair will not be disappointed. Whether sitting in or taking out, Gingergrass is a must try for Halifax visitors. Prices are midrange, with a plate of vegetable Pad Thai going for $13 and spring rolls for $6.

Café Ristretto – 1475 Lower Water Street, Halifax

This coffee bar and lounge is a great hang out spot for those looking for a mid-afternoon pick me up or perhaps a salad and sandwich. Internet access is free so bring your laptop and enjoy a cup of iced coffee along with one of their many cookie selections while gazing out at the harbor. Prices are pocket friendly too, with a cup of iced coffee with flavoring setting in at about $2. The friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere make this pick a place to stop while meandering along the harbor.

Jus Juice – found intermittently throughout Halifax

This chain is something like Jamba Juice of New York City. With several options for boosters such as protein, fiber and vitamin C, any of the selections on the menu could easily double as a lunch. One size only, these smoothies go for about $6 but are as satisfying as any lunch. With choices ranging from soy berry to banana honey, there is something to please any palate. There are nondairy options as well.

Second Cup – 5425 Spring Garden Road

Though Starbucks might be a more familiar name, especially for US tourists, Second Cup is worth a first try. There are many locations throughout Canada, the address above particular to the Halifax Public Gardens Area. Relax in a café/lounge atmosphere and enjoy one of the many varieties of tea, such as jasmine, green or spiced chai. If coffee is your preference, select any of the fine roasts, in hazelnut, vanilla, or mocha. Enjoy any beverage hot or cold. If you are looking for a light lunch or snack, choose from fruit, store made cookies or daily fresh sandwiches. This place is perfect for grabbing a fresh lunch to go for a perfect outdoor lunch in the nearby Public Gardens.

Baan Thai – Annandale Street and Dresden Way

Perhaps one of the most pleasant dining experiences in all of Halifax, this location is outside the main tourist area which makes it a perfect place for those looking for local life. Guests are welcomed by the traditional Thai music playing in the background along with the sound of water falling. Soft lighting along with the spacious wooden tables and plush cushioned chairs will make any diner feel welcome. An appetizer must are the fresh salad rolls, fresh lettuce, peppers and bean sprouts tightly rolled in delicate rice paper, served with a tangy peach/apricot sauce. The Pad Thai is a great entrée, as well as the sautéed vegetables and tofu. Save room for dessert, such as green tea ice cream, or a sweet Thai iced tea.
