Halifax pizza isn't necessarily famous but Halifax donairs certainly are. There are many pizza places in the city that serve great slices and donairs for the hungry!

While most people think of seafood as Nova Scotia's main cuisine, pizza and Halifax donairs come in a more distant second. From street-side vendors open until 4am (and later) to quiet pizza restaurants serving an authentic pizza pie by candlelight, there are many options for satiating a Halifax pizza or Halifax donair craving.

Where to Order Halifax Pizza

Alexandra’s Pizza at 1263 Queen St. has served up excellent service and quality Halifax pizza since 1991. The pizza place offers both regular and thin crust pizzas with the usual array of toppings. And for those who are new to the eastern Canada dish of poutine, readers of The Coast voted Alexandra’s cheese curd-topped and gravy-smothered dish of fries as the best in the city. For those up late in Halifax, Freeman’s Little New York at 6092 Quinpool Rd., (902) 455-7000, stays open late while still offering great Halifax pizza, a cozy atmosphere, and prompt table service.

Gatsby’s Bar and Eatery, (902) 429-9999, offers a relaxed vibe and is closer to downtown at 5675 Spring Garden Rd. The booths and pool table in the back make Gatsby’s a fun place to indulge in a slice of Halifax pizza accompanied by a local brew. Also Tomasino’s Pizzeria at 5173 South St., (902) 422-9757, rates as a fitting location for an intimate dinner that balances casual with distinct.

Pizza Central: Halifax's Pizza Corner

One of the most notable pillars of the Halifax nightlife scene is Pizza Corner, at the intersection of Blowers and Grafton streets. Here, the early-morning partiers converge on three pizza joints once the bars close. Whether grabbing a slice from European Food Shop, K.O.D., or Sicilian, there are few equally iconic places that represent Halifax pizza.

Just two blocks down hill from the madness of Pizza Corner, Venus Pizza at 1558 Barrington St., (902) 425-8882, bakes up delicious pizza but also specializes in Lebanese cuisine. From sharwarmas and falafels to subs and pizza, hungry folk can enjoy the tasty eats either as take-out or in the basic-but-clean dining area.

Halifax Donair is a Classic Experience

No matter where you grab a slice of Halifax pizza enjoying a donair from King of Donair is a must. At the 6420 Quinpool Rd. location, the folks at King of Donair lay claim to introducing the Halifax donair in 1973. It’s a twist on the Greek gyros with the pita stuffed with roasted beef instead of lamb and a sweet sauce instead of tzatziki.

Either way you slice it, a bite of Halifax pizza or a Halifax donair will be distinctly Nova Scotian experiences.
