Halifax, Nova Scotia – Dining & RestaurantsHalifax has Much to Offer Travellers from all Walks of Life
From steak to seafood to some of the finest italian food in eastern Canada, Halifax has a variety of excellent dining establishments to choose from!
Halifax is rich with culture, from the annual Busker's Festival on the waterfront to a colourful maritime history of good, hearty food, excellent music, and friendly folks and faces! Dining establishments run amok in the capital of Nova Scotia – an ethnic palette that will certainly strike a chord with any discerning foodies, no matter what the budget may be! One, however, might suggest some recommendations for those who are finding it difficult to narrow their selections down to a handful. Steak & Stein Family Restaurant, 6061 Younge StreetThe Steak & Stein Family Restaurant is one of two such establishments in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), the other being located on Portland Street in Dartmouth. The atmosphere is quite nice, though the restaurant is quite busy at most any given time of the day and week, so do not expect an extremely quiet venue. Service is professional, quick, and friendly – but the real clincher here lies in the namesake of the establishment, their delicious steaks. Steak & Stein is famous for their marinated and broiled steaks, in what they have termed a “derby” sauce – a spicy and flavourful marinade that makes the beef extremely tender, juicy, and succulent. Further, the pricing for their menu offerings is extremely conservative, and those of more modest means can easily afford to eat somewhat regularly at the steakhouse. Steak & Stein also offers a daily special alongside their various menu offerings, alongside a full range of appetizers, the garlic bread being served up on texas toast with an enormous serving of mozzarella cheese. All in all, a very pleasant and affordable dining experience for persons of all means and expectations. Fung-Wah Chinese Restaurant, 3665 Dutch Village RoadThe Fung-Wah Chinese Restaurant is located extremely close to the Halifax Shopping Center, being on Dutch Village Road, proximate to the off-ramp from the 101 Highway. A rather modest and quiet experience, the Fung Wah restaurant offers an inexpensive selection of mouth-watering chinese dishes, both the common fare such as rice and sweet and sour chicken as well as more traditionally cooked chinese dishes. The atmosphere is quaint, understated, and usually very quiet and placid. It is an unassuming spot and so is perfect for casual dining or family get togethers – the menu is extremely expansive and the work from the kitchen is top notch. Wine is also domestic and extremely inexpensive, a half liter ranging from $8 to $10 on the lower to middle end. For those looking for a filling, well made chinese meal, Fung Wah is the place to go. Il Mercato, 5650 Spring Garden RoadFor your italian fix, Il Mercato is easily one of the best restaurants in the city of Halifax. The atmosphere is very refined, with excellent accent lighting and beautiful table settings. Service is extremely polished and professional, with timely checks and prompt food service. The italian flavour of Il Mercato cannot be denied, and the menu offerings present a supreme variety of different European flavours. Particularly notable in the appetizer section would definitely be the antipasti – at the Spring Garden Road location there is a showcase for the antipasti which one can make a selection from, all delectable. The bruschetta and local Nova Scotia smoked salmon are also runners up in this particular section. The entrees are every bit as robust as the appetizers are, with such selections as pasta fusili with tomato, bocconcini in a basil pesto and parmigiano. Another favourite for many customers would have to be the stuffed ravioli, filled with roasted chicken, wild mushrooms and cambozola topped off in a mushroom and sherry cream sauce – an innovative choice by the chef and kitchen staff that is a crowd pleaser for nearly all discerning clients. Il Mercato is hard to surpass in the realm of italian gourmet – and is a must-see for anyone looking for an excellent meal in the city of Halifax!
